5 people died last weekend while failing to rescue a struggling swimmer in the Scioto River, which south from central Ohio and merges directly to the Ohio River.

The group gathered on Sunday evening when one of them attempted to go swimming. That’s when tragedy occurred. And others jumped in the river in an attempt to rescue the failing swimmer.

3 men died in the river and 2 women were taken to the hospital and died there.

At around 9 p.m., a “distraught” child ran onto the nearby road and got a nearby motorist to call 911. Two children who were under the age of 10 were placed in family services, Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer said.

I want to have a gathering with friends at the river on a Sunday night in Ohio. I think that people live better out there than they do over here. It’s really a shame that they died. It just goes to show, don’t go swimming unless you’re sure you’ll live to tell the tale, and don’t rescue swimmers unless you’re sure you’ll live.
