Amazon is seeking approval to launch 5,105 satellites for unserved or underserved individuals who do not have access to a cell phone tower to connect to cell service or data. They are doing it through existing cell service providers. Its “Leo” internet from space network aims to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink, the low-earth internet provider with over 10,000 satellites.
From CNBC: Last month, Amazon got a reprieve from the FCC when the agency granted its request to waive a requirement to deploy 1,600 of its first-generation satellites by July 30. It’s still required to launch all 3,232 of its planned satellite constellation by July 2029.
Amazon now has more than 360 satellites in orbit, which it said is enough to begin “initial service” later this year.
